Interesting article in the TIME regarding the future of the Republican party.

Quote:
Latinos need to see a quick end to the Republican congressional jihad on immigration. That shouldn't be a hard lesson for the GOP to learn; every 2008 presidential-primary candidate who went for the cheap applause of the anti-immigration right couldn't win even the Iowa caucus, let alone the nomination. Instead, the GOP should support practical immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship.

why? Because 'practical immigration reform' and 'path to citizenship' still means amnesty with a $200 fine.
Reagan tried it - it was billed as the 'last' amnesty - it was suppossed to stop illegal immigration. All it did was encourage more illegal immigration.

To be truly fair, to be truly pragmatic then allow any illegal who wishes to become legal the ability to go back to the country of their birth and apply for citizenship. Like everyone else has to do.
Or how about making it mandatory that if an illegal family has gangbangers/criminals in it, the entire family will be denied citizenship and will be deported.
Another practical idea may be to penalize those people who have achieved birthright citizenship that their citizenship will be revoked should they commit a crime.
These options seem a hell of a lot more 'fair' and pragmatic then the current 'if you touch base you are safe' immigration reform that some would rush through.

The writer's purpose was not to give recommendations on how to save IAs but the GOP. I wonder what party will replace them in the future?

A lot can happen between now and 2012----------or even 2010 with midterm elections.

Hell: how many people this time in 2005 would have anticipated a 'Black' man (OK, Obama is bi-racial, strictly speaking) running for the Presidency on a major party's auspices---------let alone win 3 years later?

There's already a path to legal status and citizenship. It's called legal immigration.

It's not just the GOP against this illegal invasion. People from all walks of life and all political affiliations are in fact banded together atleast on this issue. Illegal immigrants represent another threat to our way of life because they are doing the jobs our out of work people could be doing. I don't give a damn how many times our reps tell us we won't do those jobs, it's not true. Maybe they, the uppercrust, would not do these jobs. But we, the average citizen, would do most anything to take care of our families. And that includes a little physical labor.

This lie about Americans being lazy keeps being perpetuated in the media because they need excuses to keep these people here and keep our wages low. There are lazy people everywhere people, and they aren't all Americans.

Also, we don't need the added pollution, waste, fuel usage, etc. that would result from giving all 20 to 30 million of these illegals amnesty. It just doesn't make sense from any angle yet we keep seeing these threads appear about how much our reps need to support illegals, the DREAM ACT, immigration reform(deform!)etc. What we need to do is remove the illegal foreign presence and give Americans the chance to go to work. Then, if Americans fail to act and fill those positions, we can begin the proper processing of immigrants back into this country.

Stop campaigning for the illegals and start asking your reps to do something real for the American citizens that are already here. Let's give those millions of out of work Americans a chance to reclaim some dignity by getting back out into the work force. And if we don't step up to the plate and deliver, then think about outside help. But for God's sake stop chanting "Amnesty" for these people who have committed a criminal act by coming here illegally. Let's chant "Job security and retirement for Americans again!" instead.
