A San Francisco nonprofit has filed complaints with the U.S. Department of Justice against Target and Whole Foods, alleging discrimination against legal immigrant workers.
The Legal Aid Society of San Francisco suggests recent talk of a federal crackdown on employers of illegal immigrants may be behind the incidents.
One of the complaints concerns a 39-year-old Mexican immigrant who in August was suspended from her job at a Whole Foods Market in Redwood City. The other cites a 41-year-old Salvadoran immigrant who was fired from her job at a Target in Colma in September.

Maybe I didn't get it but it READS as if Whole Foods and Target were trying to make sure these people were legal to work in the US and when these two women couldn't produce their documentation they fired them.
I applaud them for making an effort to make sure their employees are working legally.

Well said. As an imigrant you are given a green card which calls out your status. You are instructed to carry it with you at all times, as well as your passport and if you get one your drivers license. If they couldnt produce proof then the employer in my opinion is well within their rights.
My wife is a Thai national. Her green card goes wherever she goes.
By the way as a legal immigrant she feels outraged with the attitude that illegals think they deserve preferential treatment.

Thats what I have always thought, I have an idea of what LEGAL immigrants have to go through and frankly I am astounded that illegals think they should get in for being dishonest and breaking the law while people like your wife have walked the straight and narrow, kissed the BUTT of INS to get here and stay here legally.

You know its not even a matter of kissing a butt. Its about completeing the required paper work much of which is quite redundant, and then waiting your turn.... Thais excell at patience lol.

The suspension by Whole Foods seems like a reasonable approach to the problem, without timeframes it is difficult to determine if Target may have overreacted in firing vs suspending their employee.

Makes perfect sense to me, Lindsey!
I have a feeling there's something fishy in this report . . . or possibly something missing.
