I just moved to Pinehurst, ID 7 months ago and it's nice. We are in a very small place that has made me feel cramped and unhappy and I don't like driving through the pass to CDA. But I just found a house in Athol and will be moving there Oct 1st.

I'd love some input on the town and area.

What's the good and bad things about this area?

What hidden treasures might I find here?

How are the people here?

How bad is the winter?

Best place to eat?

Best place to buy groceries?

How is the vets office there?

Is there a second hand store close by?

What attractions are here?

Any info would be great I'm really excited to be moving here! The house is really nice and now that im moving my sick father from NY here so I can take care of him we need the extra space and the country setting

Beware of train! Hundreds of trains! If your house is South of the highway If your father is sick, I think the train noise will make him sicker. My best buddy lives in Athol. He has a wonderful house on 5 acres, but!, the train tracks go right behind his property and the engineers just love those train horns. Their was a pack of wolves sighted not that long ago, behind his house. But even they couldn't stand the train noise, they left the area.

Hi!
I know this thread is old, but I was wondering if you found any answers to your questions FoxyWinnK ? anyone else have anything to add about Athol these days? I keep getting drawn to it because the location between sandpoint and cda seems decent. how is the crime over there? thanks!

I don't think FoxyWinnk will be answering you, matlida.

She didn't arrive here in good circumstances, and didn't like it here once she came.

Within a very short time, she was looking to go back to New York, where she came from, and hasn't been on the forum for quite some time now.

We don't live in Athol, but we do have a couple friends who live there. (Hmm, sounds vaguely like a certain hotel commercial).

Anyway, it's a nice area, mostly rural/residential. I'd say one of the best things about living there is one you've already pointed out which is that it's nicely located mid-way between Sandpoint and CDA. One friend has a need for ongoing medical care, and one of their requirements was to be 30 minutes or less drive to Kootenai Regional Medical Center, and I think Athol just squeaks in under that limit.

I don't believe there is a grocery store in Athol, so I think most folks head down to CDA for their grocery shopping. There is a Super 1 and a Fred Meyer on Rt 95 north of downtown CDA, and I'd guess they are within 15-20 minutes of Athol. There is a lot of other shopping along that stretch of Rt 95. I'm pretty sure there is a convenience store in Athol, so for small essentials you can get some things locally.

There are a couple restaurants in Athol, but we haven't eaten at any of them. One is a streakhouse/BBQ place which I hear is pretty good.

One thing to be aware of is that a developer plans to put in a commercial development along Rt 95, I think it's on the northeast corner of Rt 95 & Rt 54. I understand that's currently unincorporated Kootenai County, but the developer is trying to have Athol annex that land because he thinks he'll have an easier time dealing with the city. Anyway, I think he plans a hotel there, plus perhaps some other commercial properties possibly including a grocery store.

Something else to keep in mind is that Silverwood Theme Park is in Athol. That may be good, bad or indifferent to you, but it's something to be aware of.

As others have pointed out there are train tracks that run through the area, and since the area is quite flat it can be difficult to completely avoid train noise.

Dave

Old habit from where I grew up in the northeast - most any road designated by a number is usually referred to as Route XYZ.

Am I violating some unwritten rule?

thank you so much for the input cnynrat! VERY helpful! athol seems like a good location, but the lack of grocery store kind of bothers me, but not enough to make me want to live IN cda. But if it does then next year I will search for a better location. I know north idaho has low crime in general, but just wondering about this particular area, or a heads up of any other nid towns to avoid? thanks again!
