Sadly you'll be too late for the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Eastern Idaho State Fair. Just For the Fun of It! September 1-8, 2007

You've been given some great suggestions!

You had asked if anyone made it to San Diego, came close this weekend as I was in Temecula, unfortunately it was a rushed trip and I didn't get down to SD.

Ohh shucks, trips to SD are the bestest! It's living here that sucks! If you ever make it there, I can give you some great areas to try out!

Default North of Pocatello

Get in our car, head north on I-15, turn onto U.S. 20 at exit 119 in Idaho Falls and keep going north and here are a few of the sights you can see:

Drive through the city of St. Anthony and enjoy the flowers. You'll see what I mean as soon as you get into town. Stop at Clyde Keefer Park next to the river and visit the Veterans Memorial Park. The WWI dough boy statue is one of two in Idaho. Take a walk about the Greenway (it starts under the big Shell Station sign). You're likely to see eagles, osprey, herons and even a moose.

Head north again on U.S. 20 and turn east at Ashton onto SH 47, the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. Take the time to stop at Warm River and feed the fish. You can buy fish pellets from a dispenser there or use bread. Be sure to take a loaf with you. Once you start throwing small pieces of bread out into the water, you'll see the fish rise.

Keep going north and take the time to stop at Lower and Upper Mesa Falls. You'll definitely what to take camera.

When you get back to U.S. 20 in Island Park, you can turn left, cross the bridge and then turn right for a visit to Harriman State Park. A short walk will take you to the Harriman complex. This is a great trip into history.

Heading north again on U.S. 20, there's lots of scenery. Watch for the Big Springs turnoff (goes east) at Mack's Inn. If you cross the river, you've missed the turnoff. At the east end of the loop is Big Springs, the headwaters of the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. The Johnny Sack Cabin is closed this time of year, but it's probably the most photographed piece of real estate in Idaho. You can feed the fish at Big Springs, too, and you can see them better because you're standing above them.

Proceed on the loop road back to US 20 and turn north. Driving across the Henry's Lake Flat, you can see Mt. Sawtelle and the FAA structure on top. Watch for antelope in the fields. Stop at the Nature Conservancy center.

When you get across the flat, you can proceed north on US 20 into Montana or turn left onto US 87. Watch for a sign pointing to Staley Springs and turn left for a scenic drive around Henry's Lake.

North into Montana on US 20 you get to West Yellowstone and the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This is a great time to see the park -- few visitors and lots of wildlife.

There are many sights along the way. Plan to take a few days to take side trips.

There are visitor centers and museums and tourism information galore.

If you have questions or need directions, check with me.

Cathy,

It's good to see you posting here.

Your directions are far clearer than those we used in the Top 10 for Idaho Falls. Some day you may want to look at that link as I plan to start a new one very soon, since my schedule has finally slowed down some. Perhaps a quarterly link would be nice. Things to do for each season. Let me know what you think. You can always just send me a PM.

I hope you will write some original posts here. You write well and I believe you can benefit Fremont County.

Kitty Toy,

I hope you are starting to feel connected with eastern ID and not just Pocatello. Much how people stand in line in San Diego or L.A. for hours to get tickets and think nothing of it, people in eastern ID will drive for 1-2 hrs. and that seems close for what treasures are on the other end.
