My daughter's 2008 Elantra has a problem with the dashboard lights. When she turns on the headlights at night, the interior dash lights(including speedometer) go off. The dashboard dimming feature does not help it at all. Any ideas ?

Thank you.

Could be a few things. Simple would be the battery is failing.
The more complicated issue would be the instrument cluster itself. The contacts do get old and start failing. You can take it out and see if you see loose points and solder them, or get a used one from the junkyard.

My son had a 2007 Elantra Limited he drove for 100K. The weak spot for us was switches. Loved the car and never let us down, but the switches were possibly the lowest quality available. We replaced window regulator switches in two doors, a fan regulator switch in the dash, and a heater fan motor too.

Never hurts to check fuses, easy to do, but I doubt it.
