Why would you need to replace the timing chain? Its not a belt

I wonder how the dealer knows when it needs replaced because they can't see it? The car has 180,000 miles and they said the lady that owned it before me never had the timing chain replaced. This car was bought new from them by this lady.

Not a scamming dealer, the 2009 Elantra is the 2.0 motor, it has a timing belt, not a chain. Timing belt in Elantra should be replaced every 80 or 100K.
The price quoted by the dealer, if it includes new water pump and tensioner, is a reasonable price.

The video you have posted here is for the newer 1.8 L engine which does have a timing chain.

that seems like a pretty cheap price to pay to have the timing chain replaced.

This car didn't have a timing chain. It had a belt and the dealer replaced other belts also but the price went up when it was done it came to 700.00. Dealer gave girlfriend a price before the repair of 600.00 and went up to 700.00. They replaced the water pump also. Dealer gave her the old parts after the job was done.

Timing chains need to be replaced sometimes if the hydraulic lifters go bad because the chains will eat in the guides.

I think the 2.0 has belts. The 2.4 I think was chain

Some cars have a inspection cover you remove to see the belt.

On the Elantra, the 2.0 had belts, the 1.8 in the newer Elantras had chains.

The belts were on a 70 or 80K replacement interval
The chains were on an inspection interval and replace as needed depending upon inspection.
