2019 Hyundai Elantra

Am contemplating a 2019 Hyundai SEL Elantra that I found online. 38K miles - all rental fleet miles. Priced at $13K at a dealership.

I currently drive a 2005 Hyundai Elantra that has been very good to me, but it'll hit 200K miles in the next few months and is due for some major upkeep in the next 6 months (the big three are new tires, new transmission mounts, replace the timing belt).

I'm not one to rush into a car purchase. I test drove one about a month ago and walked away, and saw one online a couple weeks ago that I never pursued.

I know that those major upkeep items, while expensive, will allow the 2005 to last for a few more years, potentially getting me to 250K without a car payment. But I also worry when I take the car on long road trips that it's going to leave me on the side of the road.

I can afford the 2019 car, but I just wonder if anyone has any information about how the 2019 Hyundai Elantras are performing thus far. Anything to keep an eye out for if I decide to go see it in person this weekend?

Additionally, the same dealership also has a 2018 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition for $13,900, with 32K miles that I would also consider. Not sure if it's worth the extra $900 for a sunroof and heated front seats (which appear to be the main "extras" that come with VE versus SEL).

My wife has a 2019 Hyundai Kona with the same engine was the Elantra you’re considering. It’s a very smooth running engine. We’re averaging 33 to 35 mpg mostly in town driving in this small SUV with this engine. If driven the same way you can expect same or slightly better fuel economy we’re getting.

Currently there is no recall nor service bulletins on this model Elantra.

Well, financially you are better off keeping yours. You can get a AAA membership if you don't have and use your cell phone for the road trips. Any car can break down. Or, you can rent, it would be cheaper unless you travel often.


I have rented the 2019 Elantra for a week last year. It was a good car. Would not win any races but we were 4 adults in the car traveling. It had the android auto, apple car play, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert that I liked.

The second video is of the 2017 Elantra. Mechanically it’s the same car as the 2019. The difference is the styling of the front and rear and some touches on the dashboard but the engine, transmission, and suspension are the same.

I doubt you can go wrong with an Elantra.

you might want to see if you can buy a former rental car. I think it's hertz that's going out of business, and they have to get rid of a bunch of cars. I am sure they have some elantras.
