I want to build & price a KONA and a TUCSON with moonroof, navigation & power liftgate but the website doesn't seem to let me add these features. One trim might have the sunroof but not navigation.. another trim will have navigation but doesn't state sunroof.. No mention of power liftgate as an option.
It's been awhile since I bought a new car - are the days of picking and choosing options gone?
Yes, most of the cars esp the budget brands (I know the price doesn't seem like budget, but alas), have packages. So if you want fog lights, you have to step up to the higher trim which might cost an extra $2-4K in goodies that you will never use.

Yep, manufacturers won't let you piece options together anymore. It costs too much time and therefore money for them to do this. They'll package certain options together. It's really a way for them to make money off a buyer by making them buy a package with some of those features being something the buyer doesn't want but will buy because there are some features the buyer does want.
I don't think the dealerships want to do this either because they want to sell inventory on hand and not special order.

The implied flipside to this is that if you have the money and the time, you can configure up and special order to your heart's content with a brand like BMW. (But even BMW sells option packages.)
So -- the answer to seaduced's question ("[A]re the days of picking and choosing options gone?") is: It depends on where you're shopping. But certainly, for the more volume and budget oriented brands (like Honda -- OP asked a similar question on that forum), your choices will be fewer.

Yep. Here's how it works out for a Tucson with the OP's requirements:
Navigation is included on the SEL Plus trim ($24,200)
Power Liftgate and Sunroof are included on the Value trim ($24,050)
To get Navigation + Power Liftgate, you have to step it up to the top trim (Limited, $26,925). But what happened to the sunroof?
You have to add the Ultimate Package ($2500) on top of the Limited trim in order to get the sunroof there. So that's $29425 total. Is Navigation alone worth the $5k bump over Value trim (especially considering that Android Auto and Apple Car Play are already included)? Of course, Nav comes in for less than that if you're willing to sacrifice the sunroof...
(Prices include a model-wide $2500 "retail bonus cash" discount active this month)
I like the way it's set up, at least re the sunroof. I hate them.
