Ya there have been some pretty questionable naming of storms in recent years but Im ok with naming Emily just based on radar presentation this morning. Also plays a psychological role in people paying more attention to heavy rain/inland flooding potential with a named storm (although thats not what we base storms off of, names are purely tropical characteristics and wind speed number). Weaker storms are always debatable. Wave heights can sometimes play tricks on bouy wind reading with crest of the wave affecting wind speed readings at water level but waves shouldnt be too high from a storm just forming like this.

Edit: a bouy east of the storm center at 8am measured 6.2ft wave height.

Yeah, radar and circulation definitely there but still... No sustained winds anywhere at Tropical Storm strength.

Ya looks like higher winds aloft according to radar (in 60-70mph range!!) but no storms to bring those winds down to the surface. This would have been quite the intensifying storm had it more time over water and less dry air infiltrating from the North and West.

11amEST update keeps winds at 45mph, with weakening soon as approaches landfall. Heavy rain and a few breif tornado's will be possible across portions of FL.

There we go! Its trying to bring those winds down to the surface...man a few more hours over water could have revealed a big surprise to many!! Skyway fishing pier near mouth of Tampa Bay reporting 48mph winds, gust to 57mph.

5pm 31 July 2017: Downgraded to a Depression, winds 35mph, moving ENE 12mph, pressure 1007mb. Will exit into the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday.

Looks like maybe what happened is friction with landfall helped convection & brought down actual Tropical Storm force winds to the surface, where as just before landfall TS winds were secluded away high up aloft.

5amEST 1 August 2017: Winds 30mph, moving ENE 12mph, pressure 1011mb. Winds were found SE of the center. Back over water in the Atlantic but will stay offshore as it heads off out to sea to the NE. Could try to reorganize some but will loose tropical characteristics in a day or two according to the NHC and is poorly organized.
