I've smelled that before in other places. I think it is chlorine.

If you want bad, come over to 106 Wynn Drive (the ugliest building in all of Huntsville) and sample the water. Monday mornings the toilet water is yellowish brown because the water supplying them has been sitting in the supply pipes all weekend and it becomes discolored from the cruddy pipes. Then, when you wash your hands the water reeks like a sewer.

This thread and the BOOM thread should merge. The bleach pipe in RSA blew up, hence the bleach in tap water in that proximity.

All water is treated with chlorine, but usually the aeration process allows most of it to evaporate. Sometimes they add extra because of something going on with the water supply...the extra rains may have caused that. Call your water department and complain - it shouldn't be that noticeable!

Standard operating procedure is to run a stronger chlorine into the system a couple of times a year to kill off any colonies of micro-organisms that might have developed. Oddly, if the chlorine was even higher, you wouldn't smell it at all unless you aerated the water. The reaction of the chlorine with the organics makes for the strong smell. The only danger is to people filling aquariums, and even that can be resolved by letting the water stand in open containers for a couple of days before dumping it in the tank.
