After 2 months in Huntsville, I like living here but it has a lot to do with the fact that I am seeing living here in Alabama as an "unique" experience rather than something permanent- If I am not happy here in five years- I can move anywhere.

It is a daily struggle for me to sometimes understand things that do not make any logical or rational sense but I think the people being for the most part being friendly and genuinely nice makes up for the negatives in a way.

If I were to be brutally honest, this could be easily a top 20 but I am not going to knock this place because there are positive things:

Lack of infrastructure: It is mind blowing. This is the only place I have ever lived where at night, you may have to drive with your high beams on all the time. It is strange because in a lot of places like Colorado, Nevada, etc- you would probably get a ticket for driving with your high beams on, in most states in this country, this practice is not common at all but here it is a necessity- some places here are so dark at night that if you are vision is not all that great, you are going to struggle.

Lack of maintenance/care: I created an entire topic about this but now I am realizing that it goes beyond just lack of TLC with homes and buildings. I went to run some errands in Madison on Wednesday and 3 out 4 places I stopped in had either a system or a machine out of order- that is not normal at all in other parts of the country.

Litter/Trash: The amount of litter and trash I have seen in this area so far is unmatched- I have not seen anything like this not even in 3rd World countries like Mexico and Brazil. I think it has a lot to do with ignorance and a poor educational system if I had to guess.

I ask people why and most do not have an explanation as to why people do that here. My theory so far is that, it is a combination of laziness, ignorance, low self esteem and lack of pride.

When it is a business with a parking lot full of litter and trash- I post a nasty, one star review on Google and that seems to "wake people up"-I will continue to do this every time I go to a business that has a parking lot full of trash and litter- absolutely not normal in other parts of the country and it should never be accepted as "normal"

I would say the main problem with Huntsville is when people move here and after two months start complaining and acting like they're somehow better than the people who were here before them and that the area is somehow not worthy of them.

If they were as smart as they claim, they would probably have done some research before moving here to find out if it wasn't going to fit their abrasive, inconsiderate attitude.

But then again pompous, arrogant people are a problem everywhere they go. So, I'm not sure there's a way to fix that.

Right on and excellent assessment!
Folks for some reason, don't like it where they are so they pick greener pastures. Then they spend their time once they move trying to make it just like the place they left, crazy but you see it all the time.

Two cliché sayings come to mind but hit the mark to the point your making.

1. If you’re not part of the solution then you’re part of the problem.
2. Lead by example, talk is cheap.

The person in question only came here to make money off those he considers peons, all while offending them in an overtly outrageous manner. Thankfully there are very few people like that who are migrating to Huntsville. Most if not all of them are fine, upstanding people of various professions, along with natives who are same.

There is a whole heckuva lot more to like about Huntsville than dislike. Any rational person knows that.

I strongly believe that particular person was not who he claimed to be but an upstart engineering student who never had faced the real world. After 40 years in private industry, a person with that perspective would never last but a few months if they ever got past the interview process.

Absolutely. Immature dude with family money looking for ways to capitalize on a rapidly expanding market. No engineering there of any substance that we all could see. No sensitivity or class of any substance either. Anyway, the guy spends so much time offending people it's a wonder he spends any time making money. So there's that!

The only thing "I don't like" is that it's far from my family, the desert, beaches and mountains.

Everything else about Huntsville is great.

Y'all probably won't be getting rid of me anytime soon!
not sure about the desert, but Orange and Pensacola are just a short drive south and the Appalachian Trail is in full swing in Tennessee.

I'm actually planning a fall colors drive to Tennessee and Kentucky very soon!

Last February I took a drive down to Pensacola. I liked the area, and I liked Biloxi too (have a friend there). The weather unfortunately wasn't good so I'll have to go back. I just needed to get away from the weather, but it followed me

I like going down to Biloxi also.

Speaking of fall colors, the Annual Colorfest in Mentone is this coming weekend.
