We stayed in the Pigeon Forge area and really had a great time when we went several years ago with our family for Christmas....our cabin was HUGE. 3 levels, including a basement with a full game room. 6 bedrooms and a nice hot tub out on the deck overlooking the mountains. Pets were allowed and I took my little Pom. We found ours on VRBO.com.

There is as much if not MORE to do in Pigeon Forge than Gatlinburg, especially if you are taking kids. To be honest, Gatlinburg has gotten a little...er...redneck for me. When you see undies with rebel flags on the butt in the gift shops for sale, you've gone redneck.

If you are not dead set on Gatlinburg, check out the Blue Ridge Mountains and Helena, GA. We have friends that go every year and love it and we are planning a holiday trip with our family there this year. Helena is a pretty neat town, it reminds me somewhat of what Gatlinburg used to be like.

+1 for staying in Pigeon Forge. The number of cabins is greater, and the location is better. You can still drive up to Gatlinburg in no time (if traffic is OK) and also take a trip to Mecca, and by Mecca I mean the Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville. That is the most perfect store on earth. It even has a full downstairs kitchen shop so the whole family can find something to shop for.

Thanks for the feedback. Not set on Gatlinburg at all just looking for a nice cabin in the mountains that's not too far away from running into town for a nice dinner. Would be open to other locations that fit the bill.

The Blue Mountain Mist Bed and Breakfast, in Sevierville, is pet-friendly in the main house but not the cabins. The food is great (incredible breakfast spread), and it's far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg to make it relaxing.

We have used VRBO with success. Stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage in the art and crafts area of gatlinburg last month for $69/night. In the arts and crafts area (glades road), you can take the back way from sevierville rather than drive through gatlinburg. Very private yet only minutes to gatlinburg and good food.

If you want mountains and not crowds, check out Tellico Plains, TN. It's a little closer drive and it's really beautiful there. WE used to go to Gatlinburg twice a year but now it's so commercial, crowded, and yes, redneck as pointed out above, that we just gave up. We use Tellico Vacation Rentals. Super nice folks and they go they extra mile to make your stay special. They offer pet friendly cabins, too. You can drive the Cherohala Skyway, tour the trout hatchery, see waterfalls, and enjoy gorgeous views without fighting the crowds.
