I am from LA and will move to Houston soon. A relative told me if I bought just two years ago, I would have paid considerably less. Has housing price gone up that much? Also, would you consider driving from LA to Houston (about 1600 miles)? Thanks.

I drove from Philadelphia to the SFBay area alone (except for the company of a cat) and although a long distance thought it was well worth it because I got to see the country in a way that flying would not have allowed. So the answer to your question about whether I'd drive from LA to Houston is yes since that is a little more than 1/2 the distance.

Just moved here from an area 40 minutes north of L.A. Drove WITH TWO KIDS! Yes, it's definitely doable!
We're adjusting to the summer heat, that's about the worst of it.
In general, the move's been easier for me because I have family here and am originally from Houston. Believe me though, it's a major change. Yes, you can get a great house for much cheaper, but is that all that matters? Make sure this is the right time for you to make such a big change. My hubby's a native Californian (San Fern. Valley) and he has his days, but for the most part he's content with our decision, especially when we go see the house we could never have in So Cal. And the public schools are awesome compared to the ones over there...we went to sign up the kids and were impressed. I doubt you have kids,so anyway ...there's lots to do, lots of restaurants. People actually start up conversations...so far so good.

Best of luck with your decision!

Something fun to do on your way here, is look up ghost towns and travel to them. If you have the time. My hubby just recently brought back his car and took his time and visited some. His favorite by far was Tombstone, in AZ.

And there's plenty of work here too!

We are transplants from The O.C.
Housing here is so affordable compared to So Cal. Our house here is less than half the price and over twice as big as the one we had in CA. Property taxes blow, but since there is no income tax, it's a wash.
Also, the weather has been wonderful so far. I have been outside everyday and it's been fine. I normally hate the heat. I'm sure the *real heat* is coming, but so far, so good.
The mosquitos are what's really bothering me. Ugh. Enjoy your drive and Welcome to Houston. ~K~
