My husband and I want to go out to dinner for either great steak or seafood. Not a chain, nothing fancy, but a resturant that is quintessential Houston (new to the area). You know the kind of place where the person to your left could be a multi-millionaire and the person to your right works two jobs and splurges there once a year, but you can't tell the difference, they're just there for the food and atmosphere. Suggestions?

Ruth's Chris Steak House - 3 Course Meal for $39.95 - Dealcatcher

We Love Taste of Texas. Honestly, the best fillet I ever ate... like butter!

We've taken my sister-in-law (often taken out to fancy restaurants by drug reps... works in a pharmacy) she was impressed.

Took my uncle... old farmer, salt of the earth kind of guy and he was impressed too!

They asked for not a chain. Ruth's Chris is a mega-chain.

Then what? Taste of Texas is a chain (great). So is Pappas Steakhouse on Westheimer (also great). Ma and Pa's Steak and Tator Vittle Emporium might be a quaint place, but I don't know good the meat will be (probably WILL be fresh, though).

I like them, too - also a chain. To the OP, just go with a chain - they get the good meat.

Back in the day when I still ate red meat... my very favorite steak house was Lyn's Steakhouse on Dairy Ashford, between Memorial and I-10. On top of succulent steaks they also have a first-rate wine list. This is NOT a chain...

I agree. Best steak I've ever had.
