Legalize gambling in Texas and put some casinos on the beach? Would just like to get some opinions on the recent push to legalize gambling in Galveston. I say friggin' do it already.

Actually, I read an article about how it actually hurts the areas that have it, a few weeks ago. It's not a moral stance - but an economical issue. It adds low-paying jobs at a high cost. The only ones that benefit are the few at the top, which is a familiar story. In the meantime, it creates problems for the low and middle income people that turn out to have a gambling addiction.

As opposed to having it underground like it's always been on the island?

Casinos Take Money From States by Froma Harrop on Creators.com - A Syndicate Of Talent

Had to go look it up and re-read. It hits some things I had not thought about. My earlier attitude was "I don't gamble - it makes no difference to me."

Legalise gambling, prostitution and drugs, regulate them strictly and this country would be a much better place.

Better government run than by criminals that haven't even been elected.

Imagine how much the Houston area would benefit from having Galveston turned into a real entertainment/party area. Galveston is really ugly as it is so I wouldn't really care if it were sleazed up with casinos and brothels. It's not like there AREN'T hookers and gambling there already, anyway. Get it out in the open and make some money off of it.

I don't care much for gambling. I went to a Casino in Louisiana and I wanted to go home. Those places are depressing, haha. I honestly thought some people should just go home. I didn't play craps though, maybe that would be more fun. But, I hate losing money. Especially when the odds are stacked against me. But, I would go for the buffets!

But, I wonder what kind of development would grow around the casino's. If that is the effect they have on communities. If they don't help in anyway, then I could care less. But if they make Galveston a little more of a party place, then I will have one more reason to go there. Besides the fishing and crabbing that is already fun.

I don't gamble, period. However, having big casinos is a great way to get high-level musical and comedy acts to come to the Houston area in a fun setting. Think of having Tom Jones come a couple of times a year for a week or two of shows on a "Neo_Balinese Room" jutting out into the Gulf of Mexico. For the non-Houston residents reading here, the old Balinese Room got knocked into a million pieces two years ago by Hurricane Ike and was a nice restaurant. However, in the 50's the Maceo mafia family ran it as an illegal casino/dinner club that was essentially legal as far as Galveston city and county government (including bought off police) and had to be shut down after several years of operation (rather unpopularly too!) by the Texas Rangers.
