He'll be fine!... I had a similar situation. My daughter missed the cut-off date for 5 days and I was more frustrated than anything. She honestly could care less but I do remember I was trying somehow to get her into the school system and avoid that 'lost' year.

Fast forward to now, she's one of the older ones in her grade. She's Gifted and Talented, reads way above her grade level, does great at Math, STAAR tests were a breeze and looking into the future... She'll be close to 19 when she goes off to college, an 'extra year' with me!..

I guess I've experienced 'both ways'. My older daughter went to Kindy when she was 4 and turned 5 in September (Both my kids are September babies, 9 years apart, we lived in different state where cut-off date was in October). My older daughter was still great at school, great grades, AIG (GT in NC), no problem in that area... but I always thought that she was a 'follower' and not a 'leader', I guess it's also personality but I do think that the age played a factor. She got her Driver's License a full year after most of her classmates did. She was able to work a full year after most of her friends. She moved out for college at 17 y.o....a baby!

Some of my youngest daughter's friends are older than her, especially boys. Parents have told me that they've kept them the extra year for 'sports' purposes.
