Hi guys,

My wife (shes a teacher in need of beach and sun desperately) and I are traveling to Pensacola FL for thanksgiving because we dont have anyone to spend thanksgiving with.

I dont think we will be stopping by New Orleans because we have been already been there but we will for sure stop on our way in Mississipi and Abama coasts do you have recommendations on where? on our way "straight" seems that we will pass by Gulfport (Mississippi) and Mobile (Alabama) any other beauties around?

Regarding Pensacola FL any recommendation on beaches or things to see?

Thanks a lot guys and have a brilliant thanksgiving day

Spaniard we just took that trip 3 weeks ago. We did not stop though. We ran straight to Santa Rosa which is about a half hour more east of Pensacola. Just 20 minutes east of Pensacola we discovered something amazing. A little town called Destin. Google it. It is a vacationers wonderland though quite touristy. We ended up staying there at a water front RV park. The whole Emerald Coast is lightly populated till you get to Destin. What a great place.

Louisiana has no rest stop along 10. We spent the night in a rest stop on the Mississippi line which was owned and maintained by NASA.

Right across the big Pensacola bridge to the Emerald Coast you will land in Gulf Breeze. What a wonderful little town. Take a look at this beautiful little town. I think you will find it far nicer then Pensacola.

I cant tell you how much of a drive it was because we drove our RV there but by car at highway speeds I suspect it would be about 9 hours. When you are heading on 10, take I-12 around New Orleans and save 45 minutes drive time. On I-10 the condition of the roads on the west side of Louisiana were about as bad as the streets of houston (if that is possible) but smoothed out on the east end.

Oh yea, the whole Emerald Coast of Florida discriminates against dogs. No dogs are allowed on any beach. So we just sneaked them when it got dark. You have to get to Panama City before the towns become dog friendly again, about another 45 minutes east.

Have a safe drive.

Destin is farther than 20 minutes from Pensacola. We go there annually and Santa Rosa Beach is on 30 -A right after Destin. It takes about 30 minutes alone just to get from Destin to Santa Rosa and a good 60-90 minutes to get to Destin from Pensacola - and that is taking I-10 to 87 or through Niceville to the Mid-Bay bridge. Destin is lovely as are any of the 30-A Beaches. A lot of people I know stop in Gulf Shores, AL for pristine beaches as well and a shorter trip - however, I haven't been there myself and can't comment. Pensacola has lovely beaches as well. Have a wonderful time, you might want to Google some restaurants in the area ahead of your trip and see what places will be open on Thanksgiving Day.

Just as info, I edited this post because I googled the distance from Pensacola to Destin and it is 48 miles or 1 hour 17 minutes drive time. Then another 30 minutes or so to go beyond Destin. It's all good on the Florida Panhandle - wherever you choose to stop and stay.

Well, depends on who you ask.

Ice swimming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I wouldn't.

When we were much younger, my husband and I decided to drive to Florida to check out the scenery. Someone told us that chewing gum is a better way to stay awake during a long drive than drinking coffee. Being young and clever, we thought that beef jerky would be a better caffeine substitute, as we'd get the bonus of extra protein. So we went to Sam's and got a couple of bags of beef jerky and set out for Florida. Nine hours later, we arrived with jaws so strained from chewing jerky that we couldn't even bear to talk. Eating was out of the question. For the next day and half of our very quiet vacation, our primary source of calories was jello, as we could swallow it without chewing.

So my tip is to stay hydrated, chew gum to stay awake, bring good music, and stay away from the jerky! Pensacola had the most beautiful white sand beach!! The sand is almost pure quartz, and it squeaks when you walk on it

Water is a bit too cool for swimming but great for ankle wading and walking along the beach. Could be in the 40's or could be in the 80's in the day -- you never know what the temps will be along the coast.

I am here now and I can tell you that even in December and January we have people sun bathing on the beaches and the water is sometimes warmer then the air. Our temps are much like Houston so what ever you wear there, you will wear here.

Panhandle:
Low 45, High 67

Houston:
Low 50, High 70

We have the best beaches in the country.

Ditto to what was said.

I go to Destin once a year, and we always drive through

Let us know how it is. I was contemplating going there in December with my wife, but since she wants to swim, we will save our trip for spring.

We drive to Destin every year, straight shot. It takes about 9-10 hours. If you like cajun food, we always stop at the Best Stop, just before you get to Lafayette in Lousiana, exit 97. It is off the highway about a mile and a half. I will cut and paste the web page below. They have incredible boudin and fresh cracklins. The accents are very heavy, you will feel like you have stopped in another country. It is just a roadside market, but it is worth the stop.

Welcome to The Best Stop Supermarket** Scott, LA

You can get some incredible deals on a condo rental in Destin.
