With some of the negative, whiny posts we've had here lately, I think it's time for something fresh.

Houston Strategies: Houston a "World Capital of the Future"
In Pictures: World Capitals Of The Future - Houston and Dallas

America's Cultural Tourism Capitals - #8 Houston

Houston named hot spot for tech jobs

Those are just a few...

Any one notice that in the article America's Cultural Tourism Capitals - #8 Houston the cities are ranked by the number of annual visitors UNTIL it gets to Houston? Houston had the third-highest number of visitors (22 million) right behind New York and LA, but was ranked 8th - below Dallas, Atlanta and Boston (all with ~18 million).

Don't know about the other two, but Boston was probably higher do to the deep roots in American history and historic sites.

If they were specifically counting cultural visitors only then the numbers would be a lot lower. However, If they are counting any visitor who goes to a place and spends his money on hotels and restaurants, then numbers belong to Houston and Houston should be elevated to the No. 3 position as it obviously is the case.

Thx for posting

Tourists are low-value visitors to any economically important city, and tourism is a low-wage/low-skill industry that belongs in LV or FL or Paris or SF or NYC

Hou is world's epicenter for energy industry (an awfully important industry), much like SiliconValley dominates world's tech industry (another critical industry): both are modern suburban sprawl, car-centric regions that may not be charming for Luddite tourists from Podunk or codger towns like NYC or London, but are rather efficient regions for most residents/workers who are car and suburban-oriented...as are business travelers from NYC or any other city that matters

Need to separate out what parts of major regions are economically powerful; most such places are boring for clueless, cash-poor tourists....most major cos. (incl google, Apple, Exxon, Conoco, world's biggest hedge funds, etc) are typically based in nondescript, low-lying suburban office campuses w/massive parking garages, nr where top execs prefer to reside....hmmm

A bunch more articles here.

Some hightlights...

"It's easy to conclude that Houston has one of the most satisfying food scenes in the country right now."

"Beyond the city's gleaming office towers lies a landscape of astoundingly fine restaurants and shops, and a robust arts- and science-driven museum scene that's among the world's most esteemed."

"The truth is, Houston is one of the great international cities, with some of the most entertaining people on the planet."

"No one's quite mastered the art of self expression like freewheeling Houston."

"Houston's steel and glass frame is animated by a multi-district culinary, artistic and cultural heart, with green breathing space galore."
