I saw a terrible accident on 249 about an hour or 2 ago. The police actually shut the street down. I saw a car split in half, they had traffic backed up for over half a mile.

In the city limits, check HPD's website and click on "News Releases". Harris County Sheriff's Office has a public info site as well:

Harris County Sheriff's Office - Press Releases (http://www.hcso.hctx.net/pio/pressreleases/index.asp?cat=tra - broken link)

Since it just happened, it may be a while before info on it becomes widely available. Of course you can check the local news as well.

Yeah, not a sight you'd want to see. I remember happening upon a wreck on 610 around 2am on New Year's Day immediately after it happened, before any emergency vehicles had arrived. Car was flipped over, glass, debris everywhere. The poor driver was pinned underneath his own car, his dead arm sticking out from underneath. Chilling.

In Houston you can check the active incidents reports (police, fire, or both) but it has to be relatively recent since they are updated in almost real time. They'll list it as "MAJOR ACCIDENT/FATALITY." Doesn't give anything more than the incident (sometimes very vague), time, and intersection.
