I am moving to Houston from Iowa City, Iowa to accept a job at Aldine ISD. I am going down in a few weeks to look more closely at the city and places to live. I am a 23 year old single female and need a safe place to live that is within 30-40 minutes from the Aldine area. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Do you have any particular preferences as to the type of area (suburban, urban, young professionals, families, etc)? I would probably start by taking a look at the Jersey Village area to the west of Aldine at the intersection of Beltway 8 and 290.

Moving to Aldine

It's kind of old, but nothing's really changed.

Look at the thread jfre recommends. Look toward Humble/Kingwood to live.

I lived in the Heights area when I worked in aldine. My school was 10 miles away using the Hardy toll Rd.

A young single woman would have much more fun in The Heights than Humble/Kingwood. You'd go nuts there with all the soccer mom housewives with kids and your only social life would be affairs with married men. Hope that's not your style! :-) Also, Kingwood is travelling into town WITH the dense flow of rush hour traffic while The Heights will be comparatively a breeze as you oppose traffic.

One thing I WOULDN'T do is get an apartment right near the school in Aldine area. I used to go to a church there and found it to be pretty rough hi-crime place, esp the old apartment complexes. If you rented a small house with a room-mate (hopefully a lady HPD cop) you'd probably be OK back in the neighborhood off the main drags and away from the decaying apts.

Going up 45 or the Hardy Toll Road in the morning isn't so bad.

I can't guarantee that anyone will never be victim of any crime but I'd definitely choose the Heights, Montrose, Midtown and even some other places considered less desirable closer in than what you'll find in the Aldine/Greenspoint area. Greenspoint's reputation is worse than the reality but those apartments around the mall are still rough. Really I've heard nothing good about the apartments anywhere close to 45 and the north beltway.

I was thinking of Humble/Kingwood as well. Traffic isn't too bad in either direction during either peak (not saying it's not without its aggravations here and there but not as bad as other areas of the city). I'm going to assume that you're wanting to rent first, Iowa Teacher, so I might point out that there are newer apartments located along Betlway 8 near Humble in area called Fall Creek (unfortunately, the name of the complex escapes me right now).

Anyway, it might be an option for at least the first year.
