Hi, I was offered a teaching position at Aldine School District in Houston and was wondering if I could get some information about living in Houston and if you have anything to say about it and/or Aldine. I am currently living in Iowa City, Iowa, 23 years old, and will be a teacher (obviously). Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Aldine is a pretty rough area. I grew up there and remember its better days. It is about 68% hispanic, 23% black, 7% white, the rest is other. It is a poor area and had many of the inner city-type problems. I would not suggest living there, but teaching there might be the challenge you are up for.

My first teaching job was in Aldine 1992-1997. It is an inner city school district with mostly disadvantage kids. Mostly hispanic and black. They strive for the best they can get from the kids. I taught at Grantham MS. I taught 5 years and had a total of 2 parents show up for open house in all those years. Most did not attend parent conferences so you will not have much parental involvement. However, the district as a whole was well run and does it's best. Grantham was in the Texas Monthly issue for best Texas schools. We had lock ins and metal detection days, several fights. But for the most part it was a good experience. As a new teacher I enjoyed difficult kids. But, I didnt have a family of my own then and my whole life was those children. I worried about them constantly. Good for you and I hope you enjoy it!
ps: do not live in any area zoned to Aldine ISD
