Besides Leisure Learning, is there a not too expensive place in Houston for someone who wants to learn how to cook and make decent, respectable dishes? Thanks.

Why not just buy a cookbook and practice? There are plenty of cook books at a Half Price book store. Now if you are considering being a professional chef, that is a whole different ball game, there are culinary schools in Houston for that. But if just to feed yourself, or make a meal for you and friends, just buy a book.

cooksillustrated.com - if you subscribe to the online version, they have videos which show you how to prepare the meals. I don't know what the rates are, but I have seen good reviews of the site.

Sur la Table has some little schools. Sometimes Rice Epicurian.

Or just watch Food Network and use their recipe site. It's cooking, a feel and a flare, not rocket science.

check out youtube and other online pod casts--plenty of cooking there

do you have a Central Market--they have cooking classes during the month that feature a certain style of dish that you pay to take--but it is also a good way to meet/great if you are looking to network or meet people

I have looked around for classes as well. Sur La Table and Central Market are very expensive. Around $60 a class (sometimes a little more or less). Whole Foods does some classes occasionally and is a little cheaper.

Try village table or super suppers. They have the ingredients you put it together.

The best bang for your buck is just reading. Martha Stewart, Betty Crocker and Cooks Illustrated are all great cookbooks and two of those have wonderful web sites. The internet has wonderful videos of 'how to' 'step by step' To be a good cook it is trial and error, lots of practice, knowing what you like.

[SIZE=2]Have you tried HCC (Houston Community College)? I have no idea if they offer cooking classes but it may be worth a investigating. I took a photography class through them years ago so I know they have specialty classes. What about the Culinary Institute? Have you tried there?
