I have a 5yr old son in kindergarten. When I relocate he would've just completed his yr of kindergaten. His birthday is a couple of days after the cut off date of Sept 1st. Where I'm from that rule does not apply(NYC). From what I understand, in Houston he can not attend first grade until is is 6yrs old. My question: Is there anyway around him attending another year of kindergarten although he has done it in another state. Is there some type of test he can take? I'm not comfortable with him sitting bored a whole year in somthing he has already completed.

Help

This may be the obvious answer, but you should call HISD and ask someone. If there is a rule, there is likely to be no way around it. HISD is a huge bureaucracy, so exceptions are unlikely to be made. But the rule may not apply to 1st grade. I know they enforce it for kindergarten, but I don't know up to what grade they can really enforce an age rule. So, best to call them.

I know in our school district (Fort Bend ISD), several children from my son's preschool tested out of kindergarten altogether. Maybe your son could do the same since he has already completed a kindergarten curriculum.

I'm not sure about coming from another state, but I've heard that here in Katy, if a child attends private Kindergarten because they just miss the KISD cutoff date, they then have to sit through six weeks of public Kindergarten again and then can be promoted to first grade. That sounds a little odd to me, but just today a parent told me her child did that.

I've heard that also. I hope that is the case. I'm relocating to katy, so maybe I will give KISD a call to see if there is any truth to this. Thanks
