Just as the title says, if you could change one thing about Houston, what would it be? If nothing, please explain too.

EASY! I would change Houston's summer climate to that like in the Pacific coast of Mexico. (Winter would remain the same as is now).

I'd change the mindset of drivers here! We came from the DC area and thought that they had the worst drivers in the country. I've re-evaluated my opinion on that. Houston driver seem even worse than DC or Miami for discourteous and dangerous driving habits. I've noticed that drivers here think nothing of cutting you off with only inches to spare. Speed limits mean nothing on many roads. If you don't go with the flow of traffic (on 99 that means 15 to 20 MPH over the posted speed limit) you create a traffic situation that is more dangerous since traffic will cut in and out to get around you. Finally, no one uses turn signals! They just slam on their brakes for the turn and expect the whole line of traffic following just inches behind to stop or slow in time. In our house the Grand Parkway (99) is just known as the Kamakazi Causeway.

Better public transportation system (like rail).... and if not formal zoning, at least more attention to aesthetics (fewer billboards, fewer trees cut down, more building codes and regulations) and more concern for the environment.

Austin (where I lived previously) has done a great job with keeping trees and limiting development in the areas it needed to be limited. The natural resources (trees, the lake) have trails and have been played up. As a result, they've kept much of the natural appeal of the city and this has been much to its benefit economically because heads of companies and talented young workers want that high quality of life.

That being said, Austin doesn't have great public transportation or the big-city amenities Houston does. If Houston could take Austin's quality of life model combined with all Houston has to offer, it could be a really exceptional world-class city.

Less strip malls and sprawl. More mass transportation.

Definitely increased mass transit- I would definitely buy in the suburbs in a heartbeat if there was a reliable train system that would get one from the suburbs to the city and vice versa quickly.

I'd pick mass transportation as well, but not through metro.
Metro should be disbanded.

Build trains to and from where people live and work!!!
What an idea...

I would get rid of all the illegals, have execution as a viable option for most crimes, and allow off shoring prisoners to Siberia at 1/20 the cost to house them here and return the saving to the tax payers. demolish apartment complexes that do not meet standards. landlords that rent to illegals to also be sent to Siberia
