To the original poster: you may want to clarify what you mean by finding another social scene....

I'd live in Houston, enjoy having plenty of disposable income (assuming it's a $100K+ job - for a single this makes for nice living here) and easily travel to either U.S. coast with minimal hassle (non-stops flights readily found out of Houston). If you lived in San Fran and wanted to make a New York trip, that alone would take as long as it takes to fly non-stop from Houston to LONDON. From Houston, I can visit friends from the West and East Coasts within 3 to 5 hrs max depending on whether traveling East to West or viceversa. This is a city rich in career opportunities (I suppose it depends what you do...) with top companies based here, plenty of singles here, etc.

Thanks all. After living in London where a 1 bedroom flat costs min £180,000 I was looking forward to some more space living wise (and cheaper) however it seems San Fran is top of most peoples lists. Am sorting out a visit to both asap. Will be earning around $150,000 but a chunk of that is target driven.

Gareth!

Let me know what you choose! I'm going to Houston from London, as I'm in exactly the same boat as you, small uber expensive 1 bed flat that I own in south london, but will rent out...

I worked out that my brand new car (Look at International Autosource and buy it through them before you go, super cheap... and get's you credit history and insurance in the US... cheaply!), apartment and insurance should all cost me less then $2000 a month!!! That would just about rent you a room in a house with bills and stuff in Clapham!!

So i'm looking forward to having a new car, apartment, pool... gym on site without having to pay £40/month for some gym membership.... and to be honest, i'm looking forward to driving again after being in London for so long and relying on Public transport all the time...

Same with me. Own a 1 bed flat in Twickers which I plan to rent out. At the moment it seems I just have to get out of bed and some bill/new tax or another hits the doormat. Which area have you decided upon in Houston?

Probably Mid-Town.... seems pretty good ...

Check out some of the nightlife too, bars like pub fiction.. (gallery - the women.. lol)... but all that is close to in and around mid-town, plus you can get a cab downtown or anywhere from there to more options... looks like a good base.... I'll be working up nr the airport, so it's a reverse commute against traffic.... so shouldn't be too horrific...

Tell me about London, It's only when you look at what DD's to cancel you realise... Council Tax, TV License (Tax!) etc etc... lol, you realise how much better off you'll be. I'll be sending about $3000 a month home to cover mortgages and stuff too, but will still be able to afford a higher quality of livign then here... just trying to decide whether or not to rent something with a roommate or go fro my own place... but then you have to furnish the thing completley!

What are you thinking..... given all the research you've done?

To be honest starting to think Houston rather than San Fran. Think I'm gonna head out there in month and have a good look round. Main thing is want a better qaulity of living and from what I hear wont get that in San Fran - sounds a lot like London. I'm not moving till March so I still have time to go. Am 100% certain of one thing though, London although an awesome place, has served it's purpose.

Agree... London Rocks... but it's total survival living here... not comfortable, high standard living.. fun though..

California is generally the most expensive state for taxes etc etc, very political, so taxes are higher to pay for all the regulations etc... Texas is much cheaper.. no state income tax, low cost of living etc etc.. has a higher sales tax, but again, not as high as Ca... That said, SF is a cool place... but, if I was going to live anywhere in CA it would be Diego, not SF.

If you live in Houston you can afford to travel anywhere.
In SF you'll be townhouse/loft poor on 120k a year.

You can live the good life on a 150k in Houston. You'd have money left over to travel the country and Europe. Ok I change my mind from previous post, go with Houston.
