We are going to Houston for the long weekend. Our hotel is at the Galleria area. Can anyone recommend good local restaurants around there? Dont want to drive very far for dinner since we have a young kid. Thanks.

Well, there really isn't any Tex without the Mex style anymore.

Galleria/Uptown is pretty high dollar dining. Kids don't go out much with mom and dad there.

However, Pappas Burgers is a pretty great place to have an awesome burger and milk shake. A lot of kids like Kenny& Ziggy's Deli. Some of the biggest desserts on the planet.

Closest really good Texas Style BBQ is Goode Co. on I-10.

Cyclone Anaya's (TexMex) on Augusta and Woodway. Then walk over to the Park at Bering and Woodway afterwards.

Check out Texadelphia off Westheimer. They have what they call Texas Cheesesteaks. Be sure to have it with their signature "mustard blend sauce" YUM! VERY reasonable. Go west of the mall past Fountainview. It is on the south side of Westheimer. If you get to Winrock or Hillcroft, you'd have gone to far (it's east of Winrock, west of Fountainview somewhere in between). Almost next door to Texadelphia it's Mama's Cafe. Home cooking. Also very reasonable. Los Cucos (Tex-Mex) is also very good and reasonable located off Westheimer just west of Fountainview.

Although not typically Texan, there is a James Coney Island hot dogs location on Westheimer at Bering Dr (just west of Chimney Rock). It is a very kid friendly place.

Yeah, Tex w/o the Mex would be BBQ. Brisket... and chicken, not so much the salty shredded kind with the Hunts BBQ sauce.

While I agree that Texadelphia is very good, I don't think someone from out of town really wants to go get a Philly Cheesesteak in Houston when they ask for Texas food.

Anybody eaten at Canyon Cafe lately? Its pretty good SW style food on Post Oak right across from the Galleria, at least it was the last time I ate there about a year ago.

Don't know much about the area but my brother is opening the new Costco in the Galleria so I suspect we will be spending a lot more time there! Good luck.
