I really, really want to move to Galveston, but my parents said they aren't sure if they want to, mostly because everybody says that there's a lot of rapes and the schools are bad.

So, I would like some opinions on the schools and the crime. :]

Unfortunately, I think the way it generally works is that you live where your parents want to live and not the other way around.

Which Houston-Area Cities Have Highest, Lowest Crime Rates? - Houston News Story - KPRC Houston (http://www.click2houston.com/news/4422587/detail.html - broken link)

Why is Galveston higher in crime? And is it in just certian areas but makes the whole look bad?

Is it because of tourists?

Rather then hashing out who has more or less I would like to see posts from those who live in that specific area and very familar with it.

Galveston public schools (like Ball) have a bad rep. Yes, the rape rate per capita is extremely high. Galveston can be a downright pit for a family to live unless they have a lot of money to stay in the nicer part of town and take advantage of private schools.

It's where a lot of people from the Houston area and some other places go to have fun, usually with alcoholic beverages. Also there's a Mardi Gras festival held there....things are bound to get out of hand.

Crime is extremely localized to the upper west part of town--Streets from 30's to the 50's, both North and South of Broadway, I'd just stay away from (lots of Sec 8 Housing, welfare, etc). You won't find much crime in the Historic Districts (East End, Lost Bayou, and Silk Stocking), maybe some petty crimes or car theft here and there. You'll find the Districts from University Blvd. to the upper 20's. East End is the best, IMHO, followed by Silk Stocking, followed by Lost Bayou. We love Galveston! It's a gem for so many other reasons besides the beach. The schools get a bad rap because a few of them are pretty crappy...but there are some that are TEA rated Recognized. There are also some good private schools, Trinity Episcopal and Galveston Catholic. Good luck!!

Galveston is filthy and crime-ridden. If you want a nice seashore city, try Rockport, TX - very beautiful and safe.

Galveston is not filthy, and it is not "crime-ridden". It has its parts just like every place else...and for the record, no place is safe, including Rockport.
