I and my family are going to move to Houston and we are excited about the move, but don't know much about the City. Our main concern is schools - we have 2 elementary age kids. I will be working in the North West on W. 34th Street and we are planning on leasing for a year until we know the area. What are the areas around NW and what are the top districts in the Houston area? I accept somewhat of a commute - we are more interested in being in a good area with good schools. Any advise would be much appreciated!

I would suggest Spring Valley or Hillshire Village. 77055 is the zip.

The best school districts in the North Houston area are Klein, Cy-Fair, and then Tomball. There are certain areas that are better that others within each school district (i.e. Spring, TX 77379 where the kids go to Klein has less gang activity than the Klein Forrest area). My parents have lived in Champion Forrest since 1988 and never had any problems. It is a great area over here & I throughly enjoyed growing up here, as well as moving back here with my husband. My parents would only buy in the Klein school district, as they always believed highly in the schools, and the scores reflected this. In the Klein area, try to stick with subdvisions where the high school would be Klein or Klein Collins - those are the top choices, imo. Klein Forrest & Klein Oak are good schools too, don't get me wrong, the areas around them are just more questionable.

I feel like I am babbling now, so if there is a more specific question (as in subdivision, school, etc.) that you have, let me know.

Well it sounds like you will be working NW of downtown, but not truley NW of Houston, where Tomball and Spring are.

If you have a prices range, that makes it easier for everyone around here to suggest practical areas for you.

W. 34th Street is located just outside North Loop West (Loop 610) in northwest Houston (area codes 77092 and 77018). It runs from Hempstead Hwy to Shepherd Drive so lies totally within the NORTHWEST quadrant of the city of Houston. So, maybe with this in mind, some readers will be able to give fadel31 some advice as he requested. I'm not familiar with the schools (no kids) or commutes (no work) but am familiar with northwest Houston. I live here.

This might help Houston Schools - Houston Schools Search, Houston School rankings and comparisons

The W. 34th area is NOT a particularly desirable or safe place to live. I would suggest living farther out 290 and commuting in (though 290 sucks for traffic). The Jersey Village area would be much better and not too far...

Where exactly on W. 34th is the job located? This would help on which suburb to chose on.

They (fadel31) said: W. 34th, ZIP 77018. That narrows things down to about a 10-block stretch of W. 34th St. starting with N. Shepherd Drive on the east and W. T.C. Jester on the west (that's the east and west boundaries of ZIP 77018 on W. 34th) which is more than enough information needed to recommend elementary schools and suburbs.

There are good (and safe) neighborhoods very close by W. 34th (despite what some may say), including Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Candlelight (all north of Loop 610), and in the Heights (south of Loop 610). All are old neighborhoods with both old and recently-renovated homes. Some (of the homes) are very nice (and expensive), some not so nice. But, I'm not sure if decent homes in these neighborhoods can be leased for $900/month (fadel31's max).

Maybe some readers out there have knowledge of good elementary schools and rental rates in that area rather recommending than "farther out 290" and places half-way to Navasota and Huntsville. Otherwise, those places I've nameed are close by, safe and very good neighborhoods. It's the schools that I'm not familiar with so can't offer fadel31 advice on those.
