I currently live downtown in a very nice apartment highrise. The rent is high but I love the building and the location. I just got my rental renewal notice and it has an increase of $800 a month!! I love this place but dang! Has anyone else seen crazy increases like this in their rent?

I had a house on the west side for a lot of years and I am not interested in owning another house. I love having a complete gym onsite in addition to all of the other amenities but this huge increase sucks!

This is what happens when Downtown gets nicer. Would you rather live cheap or be in a nicer place? Can’t have both.

Well it was never "cheap" and this increase makes it extremely high priced.

Ouch, that is a large spike.
I pay $751 for my mortgage, your rent increase is more than my monthly mortgage.

It's not just Downtown. The apartment market nationally took off in a crazy upward spike starting this past spring. The rate of rent increases were like nothing that had been seen before in many markets, including Houston. Hopefully it will plateau soon, as there's only so many folks who can willingly afford such high rents in our market. It's even worse in Austin, as you would expect.

Default Rent Increase?

I am curious as to how much it would actually cost to live downtown in a high-rise and how many rooms you have etc...? We may want to move closer in at some point as the kids are leaving soon.

Right now we pay about $1400 a month for 3750 square feet 4 BR in the burbs. Of course there are 10K in taxes a year also.

You can get one-bedroom apartments for around $2100 and up. I sold my 4-bedroom home before moving here and didn’t want to go that small. I have 2 bedrooms and a separate den which I use for my fitness equipment. These units are like houses in the sky. The square footage is almost equal to my former house. So for a larger unit, you could easily triple what you’re paying for that house in the burbs.
