I used a realtor to help me sell my home and to look for another home she spent alot of time with me showed me at least 30- 40 homes and then we decided not to sell I now feel like I should give her some compensation for her time and money she spent how much should i give her

Did she get the full commission on the house she sold for you? If so, I would say that is how the cookie crumbles in real estate. Its not like she never got a dime from you. If someone can't hack that risk, then they don't need to be in the business.

That is part of the business..a BIG part of the business..which is why when we get paid, it is alot. We take the risk beforehand. I am sure your agent would appreciate any referrals you can give her, anytime you come across someone who is moving. It is a reputation business and she did a good job so let everyone know. Your situation is more common then not.

I don't think she "sold" anything by reading this part of it, hence the question. In answer to the question your asking I would do what ever your conscience tells you, that way you can sleep well...

Personally - I'd write her a check for $500 - more if she laid out money advertising my house. That's me.
