Hi Everyone,
My family is moving to Houston in August (Mom, Dad, Sister and her family). I currently live in NJ apart from them and have a few questions. I am contemplating moving there since once they move, I really don't have anyone in New Jersey.

They are moving to the Sugarland area, I think area code 77071. Aside from getting a job which really isn't my concern, how is the social scene for a single male in his early 40's? I will not know anyone there? Has anyone used the Meetup App to meet new people?

As far as housing, just browsing different sites, the rent seems to be so much cheaper then New Jersey in the zip code I provided. Are there any areas from Houston that I should stay away from due to crime etc ? I understand Houston is a huge city. I don't necessarily want to live in the same area as my family, but within 20 mins.

Also, how is the dating scene? Thanks for any future help.

Sugarland is family focused suburban sprawl. If you are single look at areas like Uptown and Upper Kirby as you can have a social life there and still be a 30 minute drive to see the family in the burbs.

Meetup app is great to find events and meet ups with people sharing similar interests. I use it frequently for marketing and real estate groups.

HAR is probably going to be your best bet to find a legit rental. I agree with chris_ut, uptown or Upper Kirby/Greenway will be convenient to Sugar Land and good social life, and convenient to other great areas of town as well.

Also I just saw that 77071 is not Sugarland but Brays Oaks. Be aware that area has flooding issues which may be why rent looked cheap there. Anything with brand new flooring throughout is a good sign it flooded.

If a second story apartment is available he may wish to consider that option....

The potential for your parked car getting flooded isn’t desirable either—something to consider...

I would look at upper Kirby as a place to live. Its got a lot going on. Not overrun with drunk 20 somethings. Its about 20 mins from Sugar Land.

Upper Kirby District

As for the dating scene. I moved here single, in my 40's, met someone, got married eventually.

Seemed like there are a lot of divorces happening with people in their late 30s and early 40s, and there seemed to be quite a few women in that age range looking for something better than their first experience. I would call it a good dating scene for that age range.

Yes, excellent point, a multi-level parking garage is desirable as well....

Check out the area just west of Uptown off of San Felipe, north of Westheimer - there seem to be lots of older singles in that area; you can choose from both regular apartments (older and newer) and townhomes or patio homes. Maybe some rental condos as well. Straightforward access south on Chimney Rock, Fountainview, or Hillcroft to US 59.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I have tried Meetup in New Jersey and it was very awkward to say the least. Then again, comparing New Jersey to Texas is like comparing onions to strawberries. I am going to fly out there next week to see what it's like, if I would be happier in Texas. I didn't realize how huge Houston is.
