The part west of Dairy Ashford was widened to multiple lanes curb-and-gutter some time between 1986 and 1995 - it was formerly two lanes each direction and blacktop, if I remember correctly. When I was little in the 1970s, west of Wilcrest it was just one lane each direction blacktop.

Imagine if Westheimer was being worked on right now, there would be horrible congestion. I guess there wasn’t that much traffic during the 1980s and 90s, weird

Traffic inside Beltway 8 was probably worse in the early 80s.

I remember in approx. 1982 they re-striped from 3 to 4 lanes (I think) and (I know) did not actually widen the pavement. I had a friend with a late-60s full size Pontiac that actually hung over the lane lines on either side.

Default About 1982-83...

I lived off of Walnut Bend in the early 1980s, and I recall Westheimer after Dairy-Ashford went from 2 to 4 lanes about 1983. It went from 2 to 3, and then to four in the years following. I also recall Hurricane Alicia in 1983, so it was about that time. HWY6 was also just two lanes at that time as well.

There are much more amazing things that the fact that some 50-60 year olds aren't sitting around on CD waiting for some random question about the width of outer Westheimer 40 years ago.

Edit: ^^^^ Looks like you got your answer.

This is true. My older family members unanimously say Houston traffic was generally worse in the 70s and 80s than it is today, which is crazy.

I find that hard to believe.

I lived off Memorial just outside the Beltway and commuted to Kinkaid (San Felipe where it merges with Memorial) for school in the early-mid 1980s. It normally took 35-45 minutes in the morning, and could take longer if conditions were worse than usual. So yeah, believe it.
