In terms of distance, Pearland is the shortest commute to the city of Houston. I work in the Medical Center and it's only about 12 miles away. In terms of the city itself, it's developing like crazy. There's new commercial and residential construction everywhere you look. The west side is also pretty diverse. Now, if you're looking for an area that's already pretty developed and very diverse, I'd definitely consider Sugar Land. It's only drawback is the commute into the city. I heard that can be brutal.

I am in Fort Bend Co., so I am partial to Sugar Land over anywhere else. I would keep it to Sugar Land or Missouri City ... otherwise you start getting far from downtown.
Pearland is closer to downtown.
