It's my first year filing, bought the house in October 2016. Is it very common to check only the General Residence Homestead Exemption box?

Yes unless you are 65 or older, disabled, a disabled veteran, or widow of a veteran killed in action.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I just wanted to make sure that under "state the year for which you are seeking exemptions", I put 2017, correct? I'm a little confused because like I said we bought the house late last year and our lender said that the tax calculations were based on the taxes after exemptions even though we obviously had not even filed for homestead exemptions yet.

Also:
- Property Owners. Both my name and my husband's name are on the deed, but he is the only one on mortgage, do I put my name as property owner 2?
- % Ownership interest. What does this mean?
- number of acres (not to exceed 20) used for residential occupancy of the structure. Our home is only 2600 ft so I'm assuming I'll just put that (?).

Yes, you put 2017. When you closed last year I'm sure in your Master Settlement you (buyer) and seller paid a prorated tax using the sellers exemption status.

Yes, you put both names as property owners

% Ownership Interest, put 100%.

I left # of acres blank on my previous exemptions as the lot info, sqft, etc was filed to the county by the builder or previous owner

I'm assuming you used a realtor to help you buy your home he/she should have done this for you.
