We currently live outside of Denver, but absolutely love Texas. We've been looking into moving for a few years now, and have visited several times. My husband is in software, and we've looked at dice.com and other places at jobs, and it looks very promising. We're planning on moving to Galveston. We know the prop tax is high (but there's no state income tax). Are there any other expenses that are unusually high?

In Galveston probably flood and home owner insurance. Probably a couple hundred a month each. Don't quote me on that, though.

Have you actually been to Galveston? Galveston has a charm all in itself, but the pictures you see on this site are not very representative of the true Galveston. Hopefully he'll be bringing home a fat paycheck so you can live somewhere nice.

We've been to Galveston several times. We'd like to be either in the historic district (around M-P streets) within 6 blocks of beach, just east of the airport, or around the country club. Are these good areas?

Country club is way out on the west end, and yeah that's pretty nice, and so are the property values. The other areas are really a mixed bag. Not uncommon to see a nicely kept house among several that are totally beat up.
