I only know of two people who recently got hired on in the middle of the year at our district, but they were both remedial math teachers.
My partner applied for a long term social studies job in January and heard nothing until the first week of March, when the school called to ask him to come to a group interview the very next day. He didn't even bother going because he knew it was only temporary and didn't want to give up his current job that came with great insurance.
I think it's unrealistic to expect a long term sub position to just be handed to you this spring. You should be subbing at schools where you want to work and making connections with admins. If you do a good job as a sub, then teachers are strongly encouraged to put your name on their preferred sub lists, which would get you first dibs.
There are 2 women in my department who were great subs last year and now are full time teachers. We were all interviewed and hired in May, to start in August, because my school needed to hire 60 new teachers to replace the ones who left or transferred.
How are you making ends meet now? Are you still airbnbing?
