We are thinking of moving to Houston from Germany.
My husband will work in Citywest boulevard. Is there anywhere close to this where it is OK to live?
Any nice areas so close that it is possible to walk to work?
We have to children,- 4 and 11 years. There must be good schools in the vicinity.

I worked in the BMC Software campus on CityWest for 3 years. The neighborhood directly west of there is a very nice older neighborhod and you could easily walk to CityWest. Homes sell for around 300K and up. Schools are among some of the better ones in HISD. In fact they just built a brand new elementary school just north of Briar Forest. The middle school is ok, I think, and Westside High School is supposed to be good.

Not sure how far you would consider walking distance. Us Houstonions don't do much of that. Some of us get in the car to go to the mailbox at the end of the driveway! But almost all the neighborhoods north of Westheimer around Wilcrest, Kirkwood, and Dairy Ashford are nice and safe and go to decent schools. If you want to spend a lot more, go on up to Memorial where the homes are 600K and up. (way up) This will get you out of HISD and into Spring Branch Schools. These are mostly all good and feed into Stratford and Memorial HS.

Good luck and if you have more questions don't hesitate to ask as I am very familiar with these areas as you can see.

Default People in Houston are not walking!

Unlike San Francisco, New York, Basel or Munich, you will not be walking most places in Houston. Houston is very spread out and it is not possible to walk from your home to most places (work, grocery, etc.). Houston has a very hot climate compared to Germany. Houston is a great place, but is best enjoyed by driving. Also, unlike many other cities there is very little public transportations (few buses or trams). Good luck!
