A clean energy incubator opens it's first location out of the Boston area, helping to lead the clean energy transition and helping to diversify the Greater Houston economy.

"For the past six years, Katie Mehnert felt lost as she tried to build businesses tied to renewable energy in Houston.

The city’s sprawl made it hard to connect with other like-minded entrepreneurs, and existing start-up incubators seemed more focused on oil-and-gas innovations.

She applied for her business, Ally Energy, a digital company aiming to diversify the traditional- and clean-energy workforce. They were accepted six weeks ago.

“I didn’t have a community,” Mehnert said. “I never felt a sense of community around clean energy and the energy transition until Greentown Labs came.”

Greentown Labs’ Houston office holds its grand opening Thursday, marking a milestone in Houston’s slow-but-accelerating embrace of the clean energy industry. It’s the incubator’s first location outside of the Boston area.

Emily Reichert, CEO of Greentown Labs, and Mayor Sylvester Turner hope the opening will send a clear message: Houston, known as the energy capital of the world, is ready to lead the energy transition."

After announcing a $25 million Series A raise last week, Cart.com’s chief executive said the company plans to rapidly grow its headcount.

Houston-based Cart.com, a provider of end-to-end e-commerce services and software offerings, has raised more than $45 million since launching in September 2020. Cart.com co-founder and CEO Omair Tariq, who previously worked as COO at Houston-based Blinds.com, said the company has grown quickly from just two employees last fall to close to 100 employees today.

Cart.com has around 20 employees based in its Houston headquarters. The company just finalized plans to open an office in Austin in May, where Cart.com has another 20 employees, Tariq said. Cart.com’s acquisition of Beaumont, Texas-based AmeriCommerce, a provider of e-commerce services and storage supplies with nationwide fulfillment capabilities, added another 30 employees there. The firm has eight employees based in Arizona. Cart.com also operates eight fulfillment centers across the nation to assist with deliveries.

This is the biggest start up to watch out for right here. It's a powerhouse with veterans at the top too. Can't wait to see what they do in the coming days.

Here’s a big one I think we missed. Flight Safety is one of the most respected private flight training companies recently broke ground on a new aviation training center. They have one next to Hobby but this one is a lot bigger. And is also being built to transition to Space in addition to modern aviatiob training.

California-based Leaf Communications to open office in Houston

Leaf Communications is opening its first Houston office, which will be the San Clemente, California-based telecommunications firm's third overall.

The new location, at 9000 Clay Road, Suite 108, will have 5,300 square feet of office and warehouse space and is expected to open in May. As part of Leaf Communications' plan to expand its construction management reach in the Southeast, the Houston office will oversee the company's East Coast satellite regions, which includes Florida and the Carolinas. The move will also allow the new office to support its regional partners more directly.

Two Leaf Communications associates — Tate Adams, manager of construction management, and Mark Mascunana, manager of East Coast architecture and engineering — will lead the Houston location and oversee hiring. Leaf Communication is looking to fill10 to 15 positions, including architecture and engineering drafters, field technicians and construction managers. Potential candidates can learn more on the company's website.

Leaf Communications specializes in small cell deployment, 5G integration, first-responder systems (ERRCS), site acquisition real-estate services, architecture and engineering, and complete project management and construction services. The company has people working in more than 20 states, but its two other offices are both in California, in San Clemente and Fairfield.

A Houston company developing robotics for underwater wind, data and naval applications is growing and helping to diversify the Greater Houston economy !

A subsea robotics-maker near Clear Lake is ramping up production to meet new deliveries this year.

Houston Mechatronics Inc., headquartered in Webster just over 2 miles from the NASA Johnson Space Center, develops artificial intelligence-powered robotic systems for offshore wind infrastructure, underwater data centers, government entities and more. The robotics company was founded by former NASA employees. Nic Radford, co-founder, CEO and CTO at Houston Mechatronics, previously led NASA’s humanoid robotics efforts for the International Space Station and future missions to Mars.

Houston Mechatronics is on track to deliver nine of its robotics products to commercial and government customers in the next 12 months, Radford said. One of the company’s flagship products is the Aquanaut, a subsea robot capable of morphing between a long-range autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of performing intricate tasks underwater.

Houston Mechatronics employs a team of around 65. The Houston-area company also has international expansions in mind: Houston Mechatronics hired its first employee based in the U.K. last year, and the company is considering opening a physical houston-mechatronics-robotics-subsea-commercial.htmloffice there in the future. HMI is also considering an expansion into Asia to support deals in that region, Radford said.

Houston Mechatronics Inc. was one of the Houston Business Journal's inaugural Innovation Award honorees in 2019.

A Houston based biotechnology startup plans to increase it's headcount by up to 5 times creating sustainable technologies and increasing Houston's economic diversity.

A Houston-based startup using biotechnology to convert carbon dioxide emissions into a variety of useful chemicals is scaling up.

Cemvita Factory uses synthetic biological processes to genetically alter microorganisms to absorb carbon dioxide and other molecules as feedstock. These genetically altered microbes can then be turned into a variety of chemicals for industrial use, such as ethylene, which can be used to make plastics.

Cemvita Factory’s biotechnology platform and the field of synthetic biology is complex, but sustainable biological processes have occurred in nature for billions of years, said Tara Karimi, co-founder and chief technology officer of Cemvita Factory.

To meet the increasing demand for its services, Cemvita Factory aims to grow its headcount by three to five times over. The company currently employs a team of around 30, including both full-time employees and contracted workers. Cemvita Factory plans to hire molecular biologists, lab technicians, chemical engineers, process engineers and other multidisciplinary scientists to its growing team.

Cemvita Factory is also growing its office space to meet its needs. The company will move into a 5,500-square-foot facility at 9350 Kirby Drive, allowing Cemvita Factory to consolidate its engineering and testing operations under one roof. The company will vacate a current space at 6101 Long Drive at the end of May, but Cemvita Factory plans to maintain its leased space within Johnson & Johnson’s JLabs at the Texas Medical Center Innovation Institute.

NRG is moving its sole corporate headquarters from New Jersey to Houston

Great news! NRG has decided to consolidate their head office in Houston after a dozen years of a split HQ (with a loss for Metro NYC or Greater Philly).

Now onto Chevron building the Executive HQ building on the old YMCA site, and Exxon's echelon leaving Irving to solidify the "Energy Capital of the World" title!

ExxonMobil isn't going to leave Irving. That's not part of the culture according to my friends who work there. None of the workers here wants the Irving crew to move either, since it would be a big distraction, apparently. It's also just 250-300 jobs, so not that big a deal.

It's not a big deal job count wise, but it would just add another Fortune 500 company to the official HQ count for Houston I think is what he's referring to.

Never say never. Depends on how the company does, what it focuses on going forward, and who is running it. But I agree it's not happening with the current leadership.
