Older cars can get salvage titles after relatively minor accidents if the cost of repairs exceeds the (low) value of the car. If you're looking for cheap wheels and could either live with the existing damage or a quick-and-dirty repair, one of these might not be a horrible deal.

For late-model vehicles, a salvage title usually means that the damage was VERY bad. It's not unusual to find a clear-titled car that has had $10k+ in collision damage repaired, including frame damage and replacement airbags. Salvage title usually means that the cost of the repairs (done properly) would've exceeded 75%+ of the value of the car.

Also, realize a salvage vehicle no longer has any warranty on it. Even though it may be 1 yr old and only have 20K miles, you are 100% on your own for repairs. I was looking at one and my insurance would cover it 100% and my credit union would also finance it too.

Some salvage vehicles are good repairs, but I would have to see the car's before pictures and know who repaired it before I would spend money on a newer salvage vehicle.
