Does anyone have information about why Fame City Waterworks didn't have longevity. I would also like to know how it became the terrible FunPlex, which I've only been to a few times. I always despised FunPlex. I thought it was abhorrent, especially compared to AstroWorld, which rendered FunPlex completely useless for most teenagers, couples, and adult with no kids. The only thing I enjoyed about FunPlex was when I visited in 1992 (I was 10 years old. Now, I'm 33 years old) with my mother and younger brothers. We saw "Batman Return", which was an awesome film. Well, my mother and I saw it. My brothers were too busy constantly stepping out of the theater to play video games.

Here is a link to the old Fame City,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fVFiZk9wFc

This was time when business owners had brilliant ideas and plans on how the success of their businesses and profits would increase in the future. I suppose the business owner knew that their plans would be eliminated when greedy corporations and conglomerate begin to develop.

I searched and discovered this site, http://www.famecitywaterworks.com, which mostly discusses Fame City at it's peak. But, I need to know exactly why the Waterpark financially fell, and why Fame City itself went out of business.

I'm going to take a guess and say that Fame City went away because people started going to Dave and Busters instead.

My friend worked there back in the day. It got old. The best part was the bowling alley. Tony Fritsch, former place kicker of Houston Oilers, used to own a restaurant in there i believe. I'm not sure why it went down hill. Maybe once they opened the waterslides next to it that business went there instead?

Coincidence, Dave and Busters was founded the year I was born, 1982. Fame City went away because the environment became shabby.

I was too young to work at Fame City. I was probably 7 or 8 years old. I never wanted to work at Fun Plex. It would have been like going to jail.

OP sure is on a roll today......

Anyways, this was one of my favorite places as a kid.
I used to love the arcade and going to the movies there.
I still remember missing out on a field trip there from day care because I smashed my fingers in a car door.
It seemed so big and full of life when I was a kid.
Like most other places, times change and kids become interested in other things.
Ownership changes hands. Life goes on.

Anyone else share childhood memories at funplex? I figured I'd throw it out there since that seems to be what the forum is dedicated to today.

When I first went to fame city it was well-lit, all the restaurants and rides were open.....as time went on the rides would fail (especially the one when you shot lasers) and then the food court basically closed down except for 1 or 2 restaurants.....the bowling alley seemed separate to me

The area changed and it suffered the same fate as astroworld....not sure about the water park but it didn't have much to offer outside of 2 slides

Physical whimsical was a birthday hangout.....to jump on that castle, make a shadow, flip on that yellow machine or run into that maze upstairs made my day...I went to sharps town

As the surrounding area (Alief) deteriorated, so did Fun Plex. The same for Adventure Bay (the waterpark). I believe it closed down the same year that Schlitterbahn Galveston opened. They just chose not to reopen for summer, instead selling off the land.

Nowadays, there are similar places in better areas, such as Main Event and Times Square, in addition to Dave & Buster's.

It probably also didn't help that the facilities became outdated. The 1980s cinemas there probably are pretty outdated now, especially compared newer Cinemark, AMC, & Edwards cinemas around town. There are better bowling alleys around as well.
