My back yard. The beer is cheaper, and people don't get as offended when I swim naked.

One good thing about Houston is that the airports are big, so you might be surprised by how little it costs to just fly somewhere. I'm flying from Houston to Chicago in a couple of weeks and it cost me 211 dollars with all fees and taxes included. That's about 75 more than it would cost in gas to drive to New Orleans and back.

But as for around here, I would suggest New Orleans, the Texas hill country and Hot Springs in Arkansas (a little longer drive but very beautiful).

Um wherever they fell like?? Strange question LOL. I couldn't imagine going out to New Orleans over and over.

It is easier to drive to New Orleans, unless you go during a big crowded, event weekend. I took a 45 minute flight there last spring. When you factor in all the waiting, it took about an hour less than driving. But to me driving is actually less stressful than traversing an airport full of angry, impatient people who are all hell bent on running me over.

New Orleans is not a place I choose to visit for fun, however. I like the Hill Country. No planning. No lines. Far less riff raff. Just get up and go.

If you're just looking to drive up to half a day and experience somewhere, then in no particular order: Austin, Lake Travis, New Braunfels, Galveston, camping at Bolivar, Freeport, San Antonio, Casinos in Lake Charles, New Orleans, Lake Conroe, Lake Somerville, Lake Livingston, (College Station if you're young and like college bars). Of course if you're willing to drive a full day then there's a lot more, i.e., skiing in Colorado or beaches in Florida.

Flights are cheap when you're single or DINKS, but when you're a single income family with several kids and still lucky to have a job in this environment, weekend flight getaways 'just because' aren't practical.

Good places are Hill Country, Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, DFW, Galveston, New Orleans, Corpus Christi.
