Was hoping someone could steer me on the right path. I'm trying to ascertain who built my pool way back when (thinking 2005 time frame). I figured best bet was to try and find the permits that may have been pulled when it was built to see who is listed on them. Am I on the right track here? If so how does one go about tracking these permits down?

It will depend on where your home is... if in Harris County, you can go to the County Records warehouse off of Franklin (or is it Commerce?). They will have it, if they pulled a permit.

I went there to check out my old Montrose home out of curiosity, and it listed how many board feet of lumber was used, pounds of nails, etc., and the house is 103 years old! I was even able to pull the original deed restrictions for the home... weird... it said "No person of color could ever buy, or live in the house, unless it was in the 'helpers quarters' in the back. Always a very interesting glimpse into the past when you search old records.

Here you go. I recall going into an old warehouse, they may have moved, but all the data I looked at was in binders. Yours is very recent, you might be able to get it online.

If your house is in the City of Houston, then the City has the permits, not the county.

The city collects the permit fees (revenue), the county uses the data to asses the tax value to the home, so they do have access to the records. I know this, I've been in their warehouse to look for the records for my house, they were still there, even after 100+ years, from the amount of wood used, to the electrical work done in 2006. I think the city has records online from 1988 onwards.

If you call them, ask for the electrical and mechanical records. In fact, if post 1988, they will probably have electronic records they can email you. My situation was a little different because it is an "historic" house (not really), but was built a in 1911, so the Historical Society looked up the online records for me and emailed me copies of the PDFs, Sandborn maps, and some mechanical records from the 40's to the 70s. Each time something was done, the county would bump up the value of the house. For the older records, I had to go to the county warehouse and had to look in old ledgers, and binders, and in there was the old hand written notes. You'd be surprised what you find in there.
