Driving to work this morning, there was a major crackdown on speeders on Beltway 8 between 90 and 59. There were 11 cars pulled over with another 5 patrol cars shooting radar in that 9 mile, or so, stretch.

That will probably keep everybody pretty cautious in the next few weeks.

They were doing the same thing Saturday in the underpass at 1960 and 249. 3 or 4 cop cars pulling people over towards the top of the underpass where you couldn't really tell what was going on until you were level with them. Must be a new push on speeders.

I recently started using the Waze app, and it has been really effective at providing a warning about mass speed traps like this. I drive the loop by Reliant daily, and so far the speed trap HPD puts up there around 8:15 AM every few days has always shown up.

As long as there is a critical mass of drivers using it (which I would assume on the Beltway at rush hour) it's going to provide a good warning to check your speed.

Perhaps drivers have gone crazy of that many were pulled over for speeding.

Its about time the cops cracked down on these people.

Someone is going to get killed with the way people drive on that stretch of BW8. As it is now, you HAVE to go 85 mph (mind you it is a 65mph zone) or else you will get rear ended, tailgated, honked at, or all of the above. To make matters worse, it is such an open road that most people on that stretch seem to feel comfortable with texting and chatting on the cell phone while driving. I know this from experience, as this is part of my daily commute and was recently rear ended by a truck on that stretch and almost pushed into the barrier and spun out as a result.

I was going 75 mph in one of the center lanes when I was rear ended. The driver of the truck was going at least 90 mph and was texting. This happens on almost a weekly basis and was unfortunately the one time I had no place to go to get out of the way.

A little off topic, but why isn't texting while driving outlawed in Houston like it is in other parts of the US?

They need to hang out on the feeders there. That is a 50 mph speed limit and some travel as fast as 70.

Have you ever left the United States and have gone to Germany? The Autobahn is similar to Beltway 8 and has no speed limit yet are far fewer car accidents than there are on U.S. highways.

Autobahn Vs. American Highways: High Speeds Equal Fewer Accidents? | Imagine Lifestyles Luxury Blog

People in the U.S. simply need to learn how to drive.

Also, HPD isn't cracking down on anything, they're is simply looking for more revenue.

i agree with this although one mentioned about the autobahn and could be a valid point but ive never been out there. here though, i feel that same tension when im on the road. many are in such a rush to get to work it's frustrating as im rarely in such a rush as so many on the road. mind ive driven everywhere. people do drive pretty well here and traffic flows pretty good, but at the same time eeeeverrrrybody is trying to get from point a to point b as fast possible.

While much of the Autobahn may not have a top speed limit, there are plenty of other rules - - and the highways are designed accordingly. The problem around here is that people want to make their own rules, including the determination of safe speeds.
