Don't let her do it. Unless you want to be a grandfather/grandmother soon.

Hate to ask you OP, but why do you want total strangers to make decision only you should make?

Come on people. You make it sound like she is a criminal already...alcohol, drugs, speeding, texting on the road, etc. Do we even need to bring this up? By now, she should already know not to mess with that.

As soon as I got my learners permit at 15 1/2, my mother immediately handed over the keys and let me drive all the way home on the freeway. What a thrill! And when I turned 16, I had no driving restrictions.

Yes, I would let her go to Galveston and have fun. There is no reason to keep them locked down in your own house deprived of happiness. I'm just coming from my perspective because my children grew up here and quite familiar with our urban and country roads. My children are mature for their age, get good grades, have good friends, and haven't been rebellious or in trouble. We are an extended intelligent family.

Now, it would be different if my kids were dumb, have been in serious trouble, or made my parenting unpleasantly difficult.

I agree with Oildog an Elnina in that only a parent can make that decision.

Amazing how times have changed. When I was 16 I was in my nasty ass old car and drove across three states and two provinces to go hang out at a buddy's parents cabin on the lake. Two 16 year olds, and a car in retrospect that I probably wouldn't drive across the city today.

No cell phones, no nothing. Now people are literally appalled that someone would let their daughter drive across metro Houston...

I made my decision before I even posted this question and the answer is a big no. Her dad is saying yes. That is my problem.

I think it depends on the child herself and how responsible she is and on the driving experience. Someone once told me "you want to let your child make mistakes (as long as they aren't putting themselves or others in harms way), while they are still home under your roof and an come to you for advise and help. If you wait till they are out the door, they makes those same mistakes without any guidance to steer them back on path." Made a lot of sense and is true.

You need to resolve that problem with your husband, and give your child an uniform answer.

As others have mentioned, you need to resolved that with your husband. For us, its only a yes when both parents say yes, if either one of us says no, then its a definite no. There's already an understanding on that in our household and the kids know it well and clear .

The only thing I would be worried about is texting and being on social media while driving. That's something so many people do without even thinking of the danger involved. But of course she could do that on streets in her neighborhood and end up in an accident.
