I was reading the past posts about using cast iron for vertical and plastic for horizontal. This is so true. In our last condo building-which was a nightmare, we have pvc everywhere and it was so loud. We could literally hear everything coming and going because they did blown in insulation which has no sound proof properties to it in my opinion.

The city does want us to use pvc but they never care about sound. How much more to use new cast iron pipes on my one vertical stack?

What is loud is the sound of water rushing when a toilet flushes, or the constant stream of water when the shower is going. PVC is louder. When I purchased my old home in Montrose, the house was all cast iron all the way to the roof vents.

The problem with cast iron is that it is heavy as heck. Also, the way in which it was put together is now considered a hazard (lead). The joints need done with lead and oakum, something most people are not familiar with these days, and I don't think plumbers even mess with it these days, opting for rubber connectors instead.

The problem I had was that the vertical stack was cracked, and the homeowner either knew about it and ignored it, or did not know. Anyway, solids would make their way down, but liquids were oozing out of the pipe to the ground (block and beam house).

I took a hammer to it and remove it completely from the roof to the ground, pain in the ass! Dangerous too... cast iron shatters like glass, but the pieces are so heavy, there was no easy way to remove it short of renting a cast iron pipe cutter. I actually considered replacing it with cast iron due to the noise, but figured PVC would last a lifetime, and I could (and did) insulate the pipe so it is not heard.

I have never heard anyone complain about the water noise running through PVC. Strange I may try to pay more attention to it
