I went to a holiday party tonight and the guest list was very multicultural. It really was a good representation of how international Houston is as a city.

The guest list included:
7 Colombians
1 Brazilian
4 Puerto Ricans
3 Austrians
1 German
2Australians
5 native born Americans

I was thinking what a wonderful mix of people it was, and how wonderful it is to live here.

I love it, too.
I grew up in Caracas with people from many countries and I'm glad I moved to Houston to get that feeling again of being in an "international city" where you can talk to people from all over the World.

Wow. Must be a heck of a party. Regular folks don't see such variety in a group of 23 people.

Well it was given by a lovely Colombian lady, and many of the guests work for the local museums and in Oil and Gas. ( we do have lots of expats in our social circle.)

If I gave a party it would probably be half "American" and half international.

Oh definitely, this is another reason why I cant live in a city smaller than Houston. This is the reason Austin totally turns me off. I can't handle Miami either even with it's latin diversity. Houston is diverse on an International level. You literally have everything here.

That's one of the great things about houston - the people you meet, friends you make and having your world view enlarged by meeting people from places you really know nothing about. They enlighten your world where you, as an American, enlighten theirs.

The people are the best thing about Houston. I think the diversity is what fosters the helpfulness you see.

Agree about Austin. One thing about Houston is its diversity.

If you really want to experience some diversity, contact IIE (International Institute of Education) and tell them that you'd be interested in hosting international visitors for dinners in your home. They also need "tour guides" from time to time.

don't get too excited with the diversity conversation
I have noticed from at least one group of people that most of the people I've met from that country are the preppy upper class that swears that they are European even though they are from Latinamerica.
Don't expect those people to know much about the average person in their country because they grew up in the equivalent of a gated community.

Just be aware of that.
