At age 4, one of my kids did t-ball (which he quit after a month because he thought it was boring). He later begged to be in soccer like his sister (which he hated because it was boring), and then gymnastics like his other sister (which he LOVED). I didn't really want to put him in any of those, but he asked. Overall, I think he was just too young.

My oldest asked for ballet when she was 4 (which she thought was boring). Then at 5 she did karate for a summer (didn't like it), basketball for 2 months (fun!) and soccer for another few months (fun!).

I didn't let them do more than one activity at a time until first grade, but I didn't see the harm in letting them try different activities one after the other.
