We are new to the topic of Autism but feel like we have gotten thrown into the deep end of the pool. We recently had our toddler evaluated by ECI and they determined out child has several delays as well as Autistic Characteristics. We are trying to learn as much as we can about Autism, groups in Houston, recommended medical professionals, etc. Any information you can pass along would be greatly appreciated it.

Start therapy as soon as possible. Not sure what your child's delays are, but the therapy needed is probably the typical: Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, and ABA Therapy (applied behavioral analysis).

How old is your toddler?

The Houston Autism Group (Houston, TX) - Meetup

There is a great Babycenter group as well. You would need to create and account there.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder - BabyCenter

The second group seems to have more older kids so it may or may not work for you in terms of questions. OTOH, the parents there have been through it all.

Where in the Houston area do you live? This is a large city and if you can find people close to you as opposed to going far away you will be better off. Depending upon where you live, I can recommend ABA providers.

You may need to get a medical evaluation to get services though. The wait lists for developmental pediatricians can be long, so you should get an appointment asap. If it turns out you don't need it you can always cancel and someone on the wait list will take the appointment.

I'm in Pearland and can give you recommendations here if you need them.

Good luck! It can seem overwhelming, but feel free to DM me if you wish to discuss things in more detail. My grandson is now 10 and was dxed at 18 months.

I want to begin by thanking you both for the information that you have provided. Our daughter will be 31 months the end of this month. As stated by the ECI assessors her delays are in Speech and some in social, fine motor, and gross motor. But the main delay is Speech. We are in the Spring/Humble area and have hear great things about the Katy area and what it offers for children with Autism. Again thank you for your help.

For Applied Behavioral Analysis, you have a Shape of Behavior Center in Spring. My grandson went to Shape of Behavior in the Museum District when we first moved to Houston (he was 3). The center he went to moved and is no longer there, but Shape has several different centers.

Autism Services | Spring, TX | ABA Treatment Programs

Humble has Including Kids. I haven't ever used them, but they sound reasonable.

Autism Behavior Therapy, Autism Behavior intervention - Including Kids, Inc. - Humble, Tx

We used Behavior TLC in Clearlake and they now offer services in Cypress, Tomball, Spring and The Woodlands. This is, imo, the best clinic around, but currently they do not have day clinics in Northwest Houston (there website says coming soon). They do offer consultation and some in home services in those areas.

Katy has a good reputation for autism services, but I can't speak to any of them directly as we live in Pearland.
