Hello All,

Does anyone know any lab breeders in the Houston area that are reasonably priced? Found a few on craigslist but @ $1000-$2000, seems a bit much. I'm not necessarily looking for AKC registered (would be nice), but must be pure breed. Gender doesn't matter.

Thanks

If you pay for a "silver" Labrador retriever, you are getting scammed. There is no such thing as a silver lab. AKC only recognizes yellow, black and chocolate. Same goes for "white" labs, there is no such thing.

Don't buy a chocolate lab.

Best to stick with black or yellow. Still, either way it will eat your house.

I bought one from a breeder up in Fairfield. He is a chocolate AKC and is a great looking dog with a wonderful temperament. I can look up the breeder information when I get home. We paid 650 if I recall. This was a little over a year ago.

Thanks henders, that would be great.

And I just love the way the silver labs look, so I'm not worried about if they are recognized by AKC or not, although I want to say one of the breeders I did look at had AKC labs and I want to say the silvers he had were AKC registered as well (not sure), but I know they were the more expensive than the chocolate.

So true! My son's ate his kitchen. Great dogs though.

just looked into Silver Labs and you're right they are not recognized by AKC and seem to be causing a frenzy in the Lab breeding community. Appears to be Lab and Weimaraner mix, but hasn't been proven. AKC has accepted some 'silver' labs but have deferred their color to being in the acceptable range for a Chocolate Lab. Interesting to say the least. Good to know I shouldn't be paying a premium if I do want to go ahead a buy a silver lab.

There are loads of labs at rescues and kill shelters. K9 Angels has adoptions every Sat and Sun at S. Shepherd and W. Alabama. There's adoption events at Petsmarts every weekend. Of course they won't have papers but what's the difference if you're not showing or breeding?

Ditto! There are breed rescue groups for just about every breed out there and there are puppies in shelters and with a variety of rescue groups.

In Houston there's the Southeast Texas Labrador Retriever Rescue: * - STLRR Home. And there are times when a breeder will adopt out one or more of the dogs they are no longer using (for breeding or showing) or the puppy just isn't quite right for their needs. A rescue group will have contacts with such breeders.
