I live in a subdivision that has a HOA. It is a violation to convert a garage into anything but what it is "supposed" to be for (our by-laws state that 2 cars must be able to park in a garage).

Yesterday I noticed some construction work going on at my neighbor's house. It clearly looks like they are converting their garage into some kind of room or rooms. They were framing walls and had sheet rock and an exterior door in the back of the construction guy's truck.

So here's my dilemma.....should I report them to the HOA? For a while now, they have been parking 2 cars on the street (we live on a very short cul-de-sac). There's almost always 2 or 3 cars in their driveway; you can easily park 4 cars in a driveway. It is also a 2 story house and I'm guessing they have at least 4 bedrooms. My main concern is that they might have an additional family come live with them (which means more cars to park on the street) or that they will try to rent that space out.

Any suggestions on what I should do? I don't want to be a rat, but it is a major violation not just a few weeds or grass being 3 centimeters too long. I know for SURE that there is a HOA nazi on our block who has reported us in the past.

Have you spoken with them on this issue? If not then yes, take pictures if you can and send them to the HOA.

I'd report them for sure.

I bought in a neighborhood with very strict HOA rules for a reason - I didn't want to live next to a bunch of hillbillies.

I would report them without hesitation.

I'd report them. Living next to a converted garage is not only ugly but hurts YOUR resale value.

If I report them, I am also concerned that the HOA will tell them who made the report. I don't want someone pounding on my door because I turned them in. My husband and I do not socialize with or know ANY of our neighbors. We are desperately trying to find a new neighborhood because we can't stand ours.

I would report them. That's the reason you buy in strict HOA. Take pictures showing house # and send them anonymously if you worry about retribution. Someone from HOA will come and investigate.
